Best deal so far in 2006! Available to most people with access to high tech chain stores.

Get top-quality hard drives for under 25 cents a gig! (My criteria: 25 cents is stupendous, 33 cents is wonderful... particularly when applied to the highest quality drives.) This week (through 16 September at CompUSA: Seagate ATA drives. 250GB for $60 (after rebates). Seagate drives come with a five year warranty, and are generally rock-solid.

We buy Seagate drives and put them in external enclosures to achieve low cost, reliable, external backup media.

Computer Deals This Week (External Drive Enclosures)

Run to CompUSA and get top-of-the-line drive enclosures for half price, no rebates needed! Mad Dog Multimedia are much better than any others we've found: they always work, need no fan to keep cool, and have a two-year warranty.

Update: CompUSA had a typo in their advertising. Only the 3.5 inch USB2 is on sale half-price. All of Mad Dog's enclosures are half price this week. Examples: US$30 for 3.5 inch Combo (USB2+Firewire); US$15 for 2.5 inch USB2. Oh, and US$60 for 5.25 inch including a DVD burner (not bad if you missed last week's $25 DVD burner deal!)

External enclosures are wonderful. Instead of buying external drives, spend a couple of minutes to assemble them yourself. You'll get a much better price, better quality product, and better warranty. (We use five-year-warranty Seagate drives plus these enclosures.) Last week's deal plus this one gives a $300 external combo drive for $130, with a five-year warranty on the drive!

Computer Deals This Week (Disk drive, DVD burner)

Here are two great deals, available to most people with access to high tech chain stores.

First, get top-quality hard drives for under 33 cents a gig! (My criteria: 25 cents is stupendous, 33 cents is wonderful... particularly when applied to the highest quality drives.) This week (through 28 January) at Circuit City: Seagate ATA drives. 200GB for $70, and $300GB for $100 (after rebates). Seagate drives come with a five year warranty, and are generally rock-solid.

Next, an almost-too-cheap-to-be-true deal. OfficeMax has DVD burner drives for $25 after rebates! This is an internal high speed drive, handling all current formats (DVD +/- R and RW, CD R/RW, etc). For details, google the mfg's part number: DRW-5s163.
